Jaguars GM: keeping Ngakoue is top priority

Vin_Cuccs : 1/1/2020 6:47 pm
“He’s a tremendous player and even a better person. I would say that’s Priority No. 1, to make sure that he comes back to Jacksonville and that he’s a Jacksonville Jaguar,”Caldwell said. “Hopefully, we can get that done where he’s here for a long period of time.”

This will definitely hurt the pursuit of an edge rusher through free agency.
this is why its the upmost importance to draft edge rushers
mphbullet36 : 1/1/2020 6:48 pm : link
no team lets a good one go because they can wreck a game. Every now and then a corner makes the market. But good edge rushers don't make it to FA.

He is gonna chase the $$$$, my guess is he tests the market.
Build the D through the draft
Gettledogman : 1/1/2020 6:53 pm : link
Build the O w FA. Trying to sign a top DE unless it is a leader type is not the way to go IMO. Build the D ground up
Great

player, but he's out of our price range. I don't want to get into a bidding war for any FA.
I prefer Matthew Judon

Anyway.
Certain positions in the draft hold a bit more weight than others
Rudy5757 : 1/1/2020 7:03 pm : link
ER, OT, QB, WR and CB are position that cost a lot of money to get and keep a good one. All things being equal you draft these positions to control costs as much a possible. Drafting and hitting on Ers is what set the Giants up for success in the past. Imagine if we hit on our OL?

90 mil in cap space and a GM who is desperate to win. I wouldn’t say anyone is out of our price range
That's why the appearance of abundance in cap space, avail FA's,
micky : 1/1/2020 7:18 pm : link
Draft possibilities is all mute when it comes to that time for these things. Appearance $90+ mil cap space may only be or wind up with minimal cap $ space after expenses. Drafting players drop unexpectedly, top FA,'s either resign or franchised etc.

So caution is needed
The Jags have some decisions to make before Yannick.

Are they going to keep Foles despite naming Minshew the starter for next year? How does that work with Foles making $15M in salary and carrying a $22M cap hit while Minshew is taking the hits making peanuts? They are two different style players so it's not as if Minshew goes down that Foles can step in without adjusting the offense. The beats down here speculate that they will have to trade Foles. He has a screwy contract where he has a roster bonus like normal, but if he is on the roster 3/20/20 than $5M of his 2021 roster bonus is guaranteed. Spotrac only calculates his signing bonus for the dead cap hit if traded, but that is incorrect as his roster bonus for 2020 and 2021 would be paid out also so there would be no cap savings. He'll eat up 22M of their cap whether he is traded or on the roster.

Currently without cutting other players to free up cap space, they only have $1.2M available. Yannick has already said he won't sign or play under the franchise tag. Remember he held out in training camp looking for a new contract. It was reported that he was willing to take a home-town discount then, but being that no negotiations were made, he said he will not do so again. If they tag him (he won't sign it), they will need to account for the tag's cap hit ($17M). They will have to clear the decks just to tag him.

I think he will hit the market.

Torrag : 1/1/2020 7:48 pm : link
Just because they would like to sign him doesn't mean they will. There are actually some good options depending on who gets to the open market.

If I was spending the money I'd re-sign Golden and sign Judon.
They have no cap space
TommyWiseau : 1/1/2020 7:51 pm : link
So idk how they will make it happen

Oh interesting. I have not watched more then 5 Ravens games this season . but Judon has flashed nicely in the games I saw. I would way rather throw big money at this guy then Leo Williams. Judon is a stud

but if we overspend were basically getting Olivier Vernon 2.0

I'll help you out. Just so we are comparing Apples to Apples, I will look at each player's 4 years in the league.
OV managed 29 sacks | 0 Int | 3 FF | 137 Solo Tackles | 43 TFL | 74 QB Hits
YN managed 37.5 sacks | 2 Int (1 Pick 6) | 14 FF (3 he recovered with 1 returned for a TD) | 105 Solo Tackles | 42 TFL | 85 QB Hits

The Ravens let Zadarius Smith go last year so they can resign Judon
RE: RE: I like Yannick

He was the prized free agent that year and never put up gaudy sack numbers. I would love to have him here don’t get me wrong. Maybe lazy analysis by me but just some food for thought if you will.
I suspect Yannick
LakeGeorgeGiant : 1/3/2020 8:52 am : link
will want to test the market provided they dont tag him.

Jags are a sinking ship.

He has already said so. He has stated that he won't sign or play under the tag. Of course, that is posturing to some degree as after July, he can only play on the tag. Bell was the only player that I can remember that opted to sit out an entire season before hitting FA. But the simple fact is the FT for DEs is a huge chunk of cap space that must be allocated while the player is tagged. They are $1.2M under the cap. They will have to clear the decks if they are to tag him with no guarantee that he'll sign it until the start of the season. There will be no home-town discounts for the Jags. If they want him without using the tag, they will have to pay the market value. In which case, they will still have to clear the decks to fit his contract under the cap. For Caldwell who was basically given the ultimatum to win or else he and Marrone are gone next year, he has some tough decisions to make.
Releasing Nick Folks will trigger a $34mm dead cap hit
cosmicj : 1/3/2020 9:04 am : link
So that is probably out of the question.
If that's the case
LakeGeorgeGiant : 1/3/2020 9:06 am : link
that does sound like a guy that wants out.

Not that I think he'll end up here, but that is a nice thought. The guy is a beast. It would go a long way toward feeling better about losing out on Young.
I would much rather overpay for Ngakoue
jcn56 : 1/3/2020 9:08 am : link
than have the FO get creative on other ways to spend the money they have earmarked for FA. They are much better off avoiding the 'let's see if we can create value with our FA dollars' game.
If the Jags intend to tag Ngakoue, that will have some
cosmicj : 1/3/2020 9:09 am : link
Knock on effects. They will need to release some players, including at positions we have gaps, such as C Brandon Linder.

They will have to trade him. But there won't be any cap savings whether he is traded or on the roster. But they have already named Minshew the starter for next year. You can't have the odd dynamic of Foles standing on the sidelines while Minshew is taking the hits.

I like your idea of trying to trade for Linder. It is out of the box thinking, but Caldwell in an effort to clear space might sacrifice a player like Linder for a draft pick. And with regards to Yannick, I think the losing in Jax has worn him down. Of course, that doesn't mean he would be eager to join our losing ways, but until he signs somewhere else, I'll keep banging the drum to sign him. He is a legit stud.

I think the dead cap hit almost mandates Foles will be with the Jags next season, which is actually reasonable from a cap perspective (the Jags will have a cap hit of about $24mm allocated to the QB position overall) and gives them a good back up option.

Btw, Coughlin now has the distinction of leaving the Jags in bad cap shape twice in his career. It’s a two-fer!
